Obesity is an issue that particularly concerns Latino Americans. The prevalence of overweight among Latino American adolescents is alarming. As Sergio contemplates the arrival of a son, his own battle with obesity worries him. Roberto Oregel and Sergio Mortara visit GoKids Boston Research institute in Massachusetts to learn more about the issue and to see how they are combating this childhood epidemic with targeted programs and research.

Profesores y estudiantes de Estudios Chicanos usan sus días no pagados para educara a la comunidad

El día 3 de febrero, los profesores del departamento de estudios chicanas/os se reunirán fuera del salón de clases, utilizando un día designado como furlough, para discutir con los estudiantes las consecuencias de la disminución de financiación en todo el sistema de educación pública.
Entre el semestre de otoño del 2008 y 2009, la universidad estatal de Northridge (CSUN) perdió el 19% de sus lectores e instructores con contrato a tiempo parcial. 206 lectores no volvieron a clases este semestre pasado. De las universidades estatales de California en el área metropolitana de Los Angeles, el campus de Los Angeles (CSULA) perdió el 40% de sus lectores, Fullerton (CSUF) perdió el 30% y Long Beach (CSULB) el 25%.

El Nuevo Sol and L.A. Beez start hyperlocal news partnership in Los Angeles

This multimedia series results from a partnership between LA Beez, an online collaboration of ethnic media organizations featuring hyperlocal news content covering the metropolitan Los Angeles area, and El Nuevo Sol, a bilingual (Spanish-English) multimedia website of the interdisciplinary program in Spanish-language journalism at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Students in courses taught by journalism professors Jéssica Retis and José Luis Benavides worked with LA Beez editors Ronald Ellerbe and Julian Do on hyperlocal stories about Van Nuys, one of the most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley, and about youth culture and the impact of the economic crisis on young people.
