Cal State Northridge students, faculty, alumni, and their supporters rally & march for the future of public higher education in California. Governor Jerry Brown has just proposed $500 million in savage cuts to the CSU system alone, and a staggering $1.4 billion in cuts to education overall. The students respond by turning out in force for this Day of Action. They gain support from Reverend James Lawson, a living legend of the civil rights movement, who has spent the year as a lecturer in residency at CSUN, teaching theory and tactics for nonviolent direct action.

The neighborhood of Van Nuys located in the heart of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley has been picked apart—piece by piece—in order to form other neighborhoods. Usually when this happens the part of Van Nuys that wants out forms a new community with a new name. But, a section of Van Nuys between Burbank, Oxnard and Sepulveda boulevards and Hazeltine Avenue, does not want to form a new community—they want to be a part of an existing one: the neighboring Sherman Oaks.

Como Pérez ha trabajado por dos años con estudiantes de posgrado en un proyecto sobre estudiantes AB 540, su resumen de las dificultades que enfrentan los estudiantes indocumentados es detallado e impactante. Durante su exposición, mencionó varios puntos importantes, como que el DREAM Act beneficiara solamente al 10% del total de estudiantes indocumentados en el país, por un lado por los requisitos de la legislación y, por otro, porque muchos estudiantes latinos ni siquiera se están graduando del high school.

Being an undocumented student is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with. As soon as I got my residency, I made it a mission to use my story to empower other students like me while educating others about the hardships undocumented students face as they try to continue their education.

Cinco años atrás, no imaginé el drástico cambio que mi vida daría al incorporarme a los infantes de marina. Haber crecido en el sur centro de Los Ángeles no me prometía ningún futuro sobresaliente. En el año 2002, dos meses después de graduarme de la preparatoria, hablé con un desconocido que me comentó acerca de la Infantería de Marina, los marines. Indirectamente, él fue quien me reclutó, ya que él se había inscrito un poco antes. Las promesas fueron inmensas; con ellos iba a obtener un entrenamiento para un buen trabajo, ganaría mucho dinero y pagarían mi carrera universitaria.

Como cualquier otro día, la mañana del 24 de septiembre, 2007 empezó con un beso. Lali se despidió de su esposo Will, amorosamente antes que ella se fuera a trabajar. Sin embargo, desde ese día, su familia ha cambiado dramáticamente.
