Chantal Coudoux, a D.C.-based policy advocate at The Bus Riders Union (BRU), describes how 92 percent of the people riding the bus are overwhelmingly working-class people of color making less than $14,000 per year. “The bus is literally folks’ way to get to the hospital, to a doctor appointment, to get their kids to school, to get to work, to look for work,” Coudoux said. “It is people’s lifeline to get to everything.”

In this feature-length documentary, low-wage immigrant hotel workers in Southern California battle for new contracts with Disney and Hyatt. The campaigns are hard-fought, but unions in the US are a shadow of their former selves – membership stands at a 100-year low, as corporate power has grown to unprecedented heights. The hospitality workers of Unite Here demonstrate creativity and determination in their struggle for justice on the job, but will that be enough?

In a day-long rally, march, and sit-in at the administration building on April 13, 2011, a growing crowd of Cal State University Northridge students protest the ongoing budget cuts and fee hikes across the CSU system. The students are joined by professors, union workers, and Alex Hanna, a leader from the recent Wisconsin capitol protests. The organizers, Students for Quality Education, call for the resignation of CSU Chancellor Charles Reed, whom they refer to as “Chancellor Greed,” for his willingness to slash student services while giving himself repeated salary increases.

Workers from all over the Western United States and Canada marched through downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from Staples Center to Pershing Square, to show their solidarity with public employees in Wisconsin and elsewhere around the country where corporate Republican governors are stripping state workers of their collective bargaining rights. The day-long event, organized by the AFL-CIO, was called “We Are One.” The parade route was filled, as far as the eye could see, with working people on the march. Numerous local and national labor leaders spoke at the culminating rally in Pershing Square.

POLITICAL MUSCLE
Cal State Northridge students, faculty, alumni, and their supporters rally & march for the future of public higher education in California. Governor Jerry Brown has just proposed $500 million in savage cuts to the CSU system alone, and a staggering $1.4 billion in cuts to education overall. The students respond by turning out in force for this Day of Action. They gain support from Reverend James Lawson, a living legend of the civil rights movement, who has spent the year as a lecturer in residency at CSUN, teaching theory and tactics for nonviolent direct action.
