A massive crowd took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, October 15, 2011 as the Occupy Los Angeles movement gained momentum going into its third week. The day’s events were part of a Global Day of Action against corporate greed. Occupy events took place over 1,000 cities worldwide, involving hundreds of thousands of citizens who are tired of the political and economic system favoring the super-rich, at the cost of everyone else.

Según los Centros de Control de Enfermedades (CDC) el porcentaje de obesidad infantil se ha triplicado en los últimos 30 años. El fenómeno parece no tener límite y se ha infiltrado en la población hispana colocándola en segundo lugar en desarrollar enfermedades relacionadas a la obesidad. Un grupo de madres, a pesar de la falta de recursos que existen en sus comunidades, han decidido romper las barreras relacionadas al sobrepeso.

Hundreds of permanent residents attended the “It Is Time” citizenship workshops in Sun Valley Saturday to begin the process of becoming citizens of the United States. In a day-long rally, march, and sit-in at the administration building on April 13, 2011, a growing crowd of Cal State University Northridge students protest the ongoing budget cuts and fee hikes across the CSU system. The students are joined by professors, union workers, and Alex Hanna, a leader from the recent Wisconsin capitol protests. The organizers, Students for Quality Education, call for the resignation of CSU Chancellor Charles Reed, whom they refer to as “Chancellor Greed,” for his willingness to slash student services while giving himself repeated salary increases.

Workers from all over the Western United States and Canada marched through downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from Staples Center to Pershing Square, to show their solidarity with public employees in Wisconsin and elsewhere around the country where corporate Republican governors are stripping state workers of their collective bargaining rights. The day-long event, organized by the AFL-CIO, was called “We Are One.” The parade route was filled, as far as the eye could see, with working people on the march. Numerous local and national labor leaders spoke at the culminating rally in Pershing Square.

Cal State Northridge students, faculty, alumni, and their supporters rally & march for the future of public higher education in California. Governor Jerry Brown has just proposed $500 million in savage cuts to the CSU system alone, and a staggering $1.4 billion in cuts to education overall. The students respond by turning out in force for this Day of Action. They gain support from Reverend James Lawson, a living legend of the civil rights movement, who has spent the year as a lecturer in residency at CSUN, teaching theory and tactics for nonviolent direct action.

The CSUN 6, as the five students and professor are known, have received much support from fellow students, professors, and community organizations such as Todos Somos Arizona (We Are All Arizona). Supporters could be found sitting in the courtroom and rallying outside the courthouse at the group’s court date Friday Jan. 21. Among the supporters sitting in the courtroom was CSUN professor Rudy Acuña. “I’m here because of the injustice,” Acuña said outside the courtroom. “This is racist. Every person arrested is a person of color.”

After years of working on and writing about the subject of human trafficking, journalist and documentary filmmaker Chelo Alvarez-Stehle has used media as a way to communicate and bring awareness on the issue.
As a child, had always been outraged at the condition of women and the superiority of men over women. She realized later on this was the reason why she became very involved. “Women are so vulnerable in the face of men’s sexuality and their needs in general,” she said.

Estudiantes continúan la lucha en contra de los recortes presupuestarios a nivel estatal

Alrededor de 5,000 estudiantes, maestros y personal de escuelas se reunieron enfrente del capitolio en Sacramento para protestar en contra de los incrementos de matriculas, reducciones de clases y recortes de personal en la educación superior. La congregación pacifica se llevó a cabo el 22 de marzo, después que días antes se llevaran a cabo protestas similares pero mas pequeñas en el estado de California.
