Más que un centro de crisis, Casa Amiga forma parte de un afectuoso hogar, donde las mujeres y jóvenes que han sufrido violencia doméstica o abusos sexuales se desahogan, denuncian si es el caso y comparten sus experiencias. En Casa Amiga, las personas se dan cuenta de que no están solas y que estos casos se repiten en la ciudad.

Obamacare is an overhaul of our current healthcare system, which will bring changes such as expanded Medicare coverage, an expanded time period in which young adults can be on their parent’s healthcare coverage, and making it harder for insurance companies to deny people with pre-existing health conditions.

Chantal Coudoux, a D.C.-based policy advocate at The Bus Riders Union (BRU), describes how 92 percent of the people riding the bus are overwhelmingly working-class people of color making less than $14,000 per year. “The bus is literally folks’ way to get to the hospital, to a doctor appointment, to get their kids to school, to get to work, to look for work,” Coudoux said. “It is people’s lifeline to get to everything.”

La mayoría de los niños latinos no tienen acceso a cuidado dental. A pesar de ser el grupo minoritario infantil más grande en este país, no les está garantizado el cuidado bucal. La tasa de embarazo de las jóvenes latinas de entre 15 y 19 años disminuyó dramáticamente en los últimos veinte años, de 104.6 en 1991 a 55.7 por cada mil jóvenes en el 2010, pero todavía es mucho más alto que la tasa nacional de 34.4 embarazos por cada mil jóvenes de entre 15 y 19 años.

Según las cifras del censo, en Estados Unidos hay 49.9 millones de individuos sin seguro médico. De ellos, 15.3 millones son latinos, 23 millones son blancos y 8.1 millones son afroamericanos. Esto hace que los latinos sean el grupo estadounidense con la proporción más alta de personas que no tienen seguro médico. Uno de cada tres latinos no tiene seguro médico.

“En Palm Springs, me querían cobrar 30 mil dólares para arreglarme los dientes frontales”, dijo Mike Carr de 50 años de edad, residente de Palm Springs. “Crucé la frontera y acá (en Tijuana, México), me pusieron los dientes de enfrente, más tres endodoncias y otras cosas más, por sólo 5 mil dólares, y he quedado feliz con el trabajo que me hicieron”.

Queens, New York-Isabel Goncalves was diagnosed when she was four years old. “I was overwhelmed, shocked, and cried when I heard the news of her diagnosis of vitiligo,” said Goncalves’ mother, Maria Gonzalez. Now that Goncalves is 12-years-old, eight years later, her skin depigmentation has spread throughout her whole body, except her face. “She is really confident. She doesn’t like to cover up her vitiligo, ” said Gonzalez. Even though, she is confident in her own skin, Goncalves said, people still look at her differently and, at times, make her the outcast. “On a daily basis, people are constantly making fun of me and they say I look like a cow. They are constantly saying I look weird. I am bullied,” she said. Gocalves has vitiligo.
