Chantal Coudoux, a D.C.-based policy advocate at The Bus Riders Union (BRU), describes how 92 percent of the people riding the bus are overwhelmingly working-class people of color making less than $14,000 per year. “The bus is literally folks’ way to get to the hospital, to a doctor appointment, to get their kids to school, to get to work, to look for work,” Coudoux said. “It is people’s lifeline to get to everything.”

Durante la segunda guerra mundial, los países de México y Estados Unidos firmaron un tratado bilateral para incorporar trabajadores en mexicanos en la producción agrícola. Este pacto se llamó Proyecto Bracero que significa “hombres con brazos fuertes”. El proyecto tenía el propósito de crear trabajos seguros que incluían beneficios de salud y condiciones adecuadas de trabajo. Los trabajadores que se incorporaron a este programa continúan reclamando el pago de sus beneficios.

Students and activists gathered in Los Angeles to protest against Arizona’s anti-immigrants law and in support of the Dream Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act). Immigrant rights groups and organizations such as The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), and students organizations such as Dreams to be Heard from Cal State Northridge, and IDEAS from UCLA also participated in the protest to support justice and human rights.

The Dream Continues shows aspects of migrant workers living the “American Dream.” The film was inspired by my father who came to the United States 10 years ago and worked as a day laborer to give his family a better opportunity at life—with education as the key factor for us to succeed. The film inter-cuts my father’s story with the stories of the day laborers who work at the Home Depot that we drive past every day.

After years of working on and writing about the subject of human trafficking, journalist and documentary filmmaker Chelo Alvarez-Stehle has used media as a way to communicate and bring awareness on the issue.
As a child, had always been outraged at the condition of women and the superiority of men over women. She realized later on this was the reason why she became very involved. “Women are so vulnerable in the face of men’s sexuality and their needs in general,” she said.
