Tengo muy presente las palabras del senador Gil Cedillo, “La pregunta no es; ¿cuándo se aprobará la reforma de inmigración? La pregunta es: ¿estarás listo para ello? ¿Listo para aprovechar al máximo este privilegio? En mi caso, para responder a las preguntas el senador Cedillo, le diría, “Voy a estar listo con un título en la mano y la experiencia para respaldarlo”.

De origen salvadoreño, Pedro Noé Hernández, de 26 años de edad, obtuvo su licenciatura de biología en la Universidad del Estado de California, Northridge (CSUN), y después decidió viajar al país natal de su madre, México, al ver que en Estados Unidos sería muy difícil asistir a la escuela de odontología. Pedro salió voluntariamente del Estados Unidos para poder lograr su meta: estudiar odontología, y lo está haciendo en la UNAM en México.

Durante un foro de información en la Placita Olvera, varios abogados recomendaron esperar hasta el 15 de agosto para solicitar y les recomendaron a los jóvenes que sean cuidadosos con posibles fraudes. A pesar de estar contentos con lo que ellos llaman “una pequeña victoria hacia la gran batalla”, activistas y aliados continúan festejando el hecho de que miles de estudiantes podrán finalmente salir de las sombras.

Después de darse a conocer El Proceso de Acción Diferida, que inmediatamente detendrá las deportaciones de miles de estudiantes indocumentados que califiquen bajo ciertas restricciones, y les proveerá un permiso de trabajo, las reacciones no se han hecho esperar. Estudiantes y recién graduados esperan ansiosamente el periodo de 60 días para poder convertir sus sueños en realidad.

Luis Álvarez, de 28 años de edad, decidío regresar a México en el 2009 después de haber obtenido una licenciatura en Ingenieria Eléctrica de la Universidad del Estado de California, Los Ángeles. Ahora, Luis puede compartir una historia de triunfo en la cual menciona que “El único obstáculo que te detiene de lograr tus sueños eres tú mismo”.

Daniel, de 22 años de edad, vivió en Carolina del Sur por 13 años y decidío regresar a México en el 2007 después de graduarse de la preparatoria y darse cuenta que no habia posibilidades de que continuara una educación universitaria. Afortunadamente, fue aceptado en el Tecnológico de Monterrey en Mexico, donde este año obtendrá su licenciatura en Relaciones Internacionales.

A tiny contingent of student activists takes up a small patch of grass on the main lawn at Cal State University Northridge for “Occupy CSUN,” on October 13, 2011. The organizers claim peak attendance of 100 students at the encampment, though as the day wears on, the number dwindles to approximately a dozen. Though CSUN is one of the fifty largest universities in the entire country, the Occupy movement is unable to gain traction here, and the encampment vanishes that same night.

Participants say they are willing to stay “as long as it takes” to change a political and economic system which serves the ultra-wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

Citizens organize a petition drive in the San Fernando Valley of northern Los Angeles on September 24, 2011, as part of the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” campaign. Los Angeles currently gets around 40% of its electricity from two dirty coal-fired power plants in Arizona and Utah, and while the city already has a plan to move away from coal over time, the Sierra Club wants to accelerate the pace of change, so that LA is beyond coal by 2020.

In a day-long rally, march, and sit-in at the administration building on April 13, 2011, a growing crowd of Cal State University Northridge students protest the ongoing budget cuts and fee hikes across the CSU system. The students are joined by professors, union workers, and Alex Hanna, a leader from the recent Wisconsin capitol protests. The organizers, Students for Quality Education, call for the resignation of CSU Chancellor Charles Reed, whom they refer to as “Chancellor Greed,” for his willingness to slash student services while giving himself repeated salary increases.
