A tiny contingent of student activists takes up a small patch of grass on the main lawn at Cal State University Northridge for “Occupy CSUN,” on October 13, 2011. The organizers claim peak attendance of 100 students at the encampment, though as the day wears on, the number dwindles to approximately a dozen. Though CSUN is one of the fifty largest universities in the entire country, the Occupy movement is unable to gain traction here, and the encampment vanishes that same night.

El programa de Transferencia Electrónica de Beneficios que proporciona CalFresh (formalmente conocido como Food Stamps) es un subsidio del gobierno que ayuda a las familias de bajos ingresos en la prestación de los recursos alimentarios. Aunque este programa ha sido de gran ayuda para muchos, el programa de restaurantes de comida, un componente de EBT, que permite a los usuarios a comprar la comida rápida, está perjudicando a la comunidad en lugar de avanzar.

“Todo es rápido en este país. Pasas por el autoservicio y ya te dan la comida lista”, comenta César Gonzalo Aguilar, un residente de Los Ángeles. Y añade: “Y cuando voy hacia mi trabajo o cuando a veces salgo a hacer un mandado y no alcanzo a llevar comida de mi casa, tengo obligatoriamente que comprar algo fuera en la calle”.

María Ester Mejía ayuda en la despensa y Araceli Saravia asiste periódicamente. En 2002, cuando la despensa de alimentos —llamada El Proyecto Nehemias— se inició en la primera Iglesia del Pacto Evangélico, la sede del programa, alrededor de 30 familias venían cada dos semanas para recibir alimentos. No era comida “gourmet” (calabazas, chiles, tomates, y más verduras, arroz, leche, frijoles secos), pero la gente apreciaba la donación y la iglesia podría administrar la distribución con un puñado de voluntarios.

“Tenemos compañías como Monsanto, que producen pesticidas y ahora están involucradas en productos transgénicos. Las compañías de comida rápida como McDonald’s, que controlan la comida globalmente, o Wal-Mart, que hace 15 años no tenía presencia en la venta de comida y ahora es globalmente la mayor tienda de alimentos. Éstas, como otras tantas compañías están detrás de la industria alimentaria”, argumenta Robert Gottlieb, autor del libro Justicia Alimentaria mientras presenta su estudio y comparte con los asistentes al evento The Origins and Future of Farm to School en Riverside, California.

Civil Rights Pioneer Addresses Students at CSUN Day of Action

Civil rights pioneer Reverend James Lawson, Jr. – who marched with MLK and Cesar Chavez and who trained nonviolent resistors from the lunch counters of 1960 North Carolina to the college students of today – addresses the crowd at Cal State Northridge, as part of the statewide Day of Action for Higher Education, held on March 2, 2011. In the Governor’s new budget, Jerry Brown has proposed $500 million in cuts from the CSU system alone – public education is under assault! Rev. Lawson discusses the proper role of institutions in the life of a society, and exposes the government’s false claims that “we’re out of money.” He closes by encouraging students to make this day’s protest just one part of a meaningful life, filled with actions aimed at creating a better world.

Cal State Northridge students, faculty, alumni, and their supporters rally & march for the future of public higher education in California. Governor Jerry Brown has just proposed $500 million in savage cuts to the CSU system alone, and a staggering $1.4 billion in cuts to education overall. The students respond by turning out in force for this Day of Action. They gain support from Reverend James Lawson, a living legend of the civil rights movement, who has spent the year as a lecturer in residency at CSUN, teaching theory and tactics for nonviolent direct action.

The CSUN 6, as the five students and professor are known, have received much support from fellow students, professors, and community organizations such as Todos Somos Arizona (We Are All Arizona). Supporters could be found sitting in the courtroom and rallying outside the courthouse at the group’s court date Friday Jan. 21. Among the supporters sitting in the courtroom was CSUN professor Rudy Acuña. “I’m here because of the injustice,” Acuña said outside the courtroom. “This is racist. Every person arrested is a person of color.”
