When driving through the urban, lower class neighborhoods of Los Angeles, there is a visible trend that is made up of graphics, billboard advertisements and food. The metropolis is landscaped with several features, including a fast food restaurant that is in short walking distance from an apartment complex, and billboards that will catch your eyes with phrases like “$5 for 5 hot dogs”, “Me encanta,“ with the letter M displayed across the billboard behind a sweet ice tea, and “$1.29 Fish-O-Fillet Fridays are back”.

Several cities across Northern California are implementing urban farms to increase food security and access to healthy food in low-income communities. According to community gardeners, urban farms create awareness about the importance of fresh and local food. They connect communities to how their food is produced. Urban farms also have potential to better reflect and serve the food justice cause through strength in diversity.

According to the California Restaurant Meal Program, Vasquez is one of the 53 million beneficiaries of the Electronic Balance Transfer (EBT) food stamp program. “Now I do not have to deprive my son, who is the main beneficiary,” she said in Spanish. “And if my son desires to eat something, I can buy it with that card.”
